Not everyone has a garden and a mast — and that’s fine. A lot of good UK VHF/UHF listening still happens from flats if you’re realistic.
What usually works
- Window / loft placement beats a radio on the kitchen table
- A simple dual-band whip outdoors (even a balcony railing mount, where allowed) transforms handheld listening
- For SDR: a decent outdoor or attic antenna beats the stock telescopic every time
- Keep coax runs sensible; cheap thin coax kills UHF fast
What to watch
- Lease / landlord rules — don’t drill what you can’t drill
- Neighbour RF noise (LED PSUs, broadband kit) — sometimes moving 2 metres cures more than buying a £200 antenna
- If you transmit later under an amateur licence, EMC and licence conditions matter more than “it hears OK”
Programming tip
Use CHIRP (official download) for many HTs once you’ve built a quiet receive list from ukrepeater.net and this site’s database. Don’t copy random codeplugs full of junk channels.
